World Contraception Day Is This Saturday, And We Have A Mission For YOU!
As many strides as we have taken over the last few years, sex and birth control still remain stigmatized in many social groups. The myths and misconceptions ain’t helping get the facts out either. When it comes to the millennial population, the lack of knowledge is SHOCKING.
- 1 in 10 millennials (10 per cent) wrongly believe you cannot get pregnant while menstruating – compared to 21 per cent in Canada alone.
- Millennial women are using social and online media (20 per cent), friends (19 per cent) and women’s magazines (17 per cent) as key sources of information without always checking their accuracy.
- 32 per cent of millennials wrongly believe that long-acting reversible forms of contraception (LARC) methods are never suitable for women who have not yet had a child.
Are you horrified by these stats? We certainly are. And we’ve decided to do something about it!
In honour of World Contraception Day, we’re here to ask you to do your research. Once you do, open yourself up to honest conversation and share your experiences. Chances are, there’s a young woman in your life that will benefit from your knowledge.
Maybe it’s a shy family friend who you know would be too mortified to discuss birth control options with her healthcare provider. Perhaps your boyfriend’s sibling who just started dating her first boyfriend and has some apprehension about the subject. Not sure where to start? Imagine if you could share a nugget of wisdom about birth control with your 15 year old self, what would it be?
Bottom line, if you’re a grown-ass woman who’s educated on contraception, you NEED to share your experiences and resources with the younger ‘uns. C’mon sisterhood!
