New year, new movies and TV!

2025 is kicking off with an awesome slate of new releases. From Meghan Markle’s new lifestyle series, to some of our favourite women-led titles to come out of TIFF 2024, to a new comedy series set in northern Canada, these titles are setting the tone for a great year of film and TV ahead. 

Here are the streaming and theatrical releases to watch out for in January 2025:

North of North

The new Arctic comedy North of North tells the story of a young Inuk woman reinventing herself in her tiny northern community. After a public exit from her marriage, Siaja sets out to find herself, navigating complicated relationships, her new career, and motherhood in a town where everyone knows her business. Filmed in and around Iqaluit, North of North was created by Inuk filmmakers Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril and stars Inuk actor Anna Lambe.

The Room Next Door

In The Room Next Door, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton star as two old friends reunited by an extreme situation. While Ingrid and Martha were once inseparable when they worked for the same New York magazine, life pulled the two writers in different directions. This film from Pedro Almodóvar, his first English-language feature, tells the story of their rekindling friendship and the heartbreaking secrets between them.

With Love, Meghan

Meghan Markle is inviting viewers into her world with this inspiring new lifestyle series. In the latest release from Archewell Productions, the Duchess of Sussex will blend practical how-to’s and candid conversation with friends new and old, including special guests Roy Choi, Mindy Kaling, and Alice Waters. From the kitchen to the garden and beyond, follow Meghan as she shares her personal tips and tricks and finds beauty in the unexpected.

XO, Kitty Season 2

The second season of XO, Kitty is packed with juicy surprises and the return of a beloved character from the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before universe. Teen matchmaker Kitty Song Covey is single, and back in Seoul for a new semester at KISS. Ready for a fresh start, Kitty soon finds herself on a wild adventure full of fresh faces, old secrets, and even an appearance from Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo).

The Last Showgirl

The Last Showgirl is a story of rhinestones and resilience, told through the eyes of Shelly (Pamela Anderson). When her Las Vegas show is suddenly cancelled after a 30-year run, the seasoned showgirl must find her own place in the world. Gia Coppola directs this poignant story with a stacked cast of standout women, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Brenda Song, Kiernan Shipka and Billie Lourd.

Curl Power

Curl Power is a touching depiction of girlhood and coming-of-age, both on and off the ice. Determined to win the Canadian Junior Curling Championship, the 5 teammates/besties of the 4KGIRL$ balance intense training with their lives as teenagers navigating friendship, love, mental health, school, and all the pressures that come with being a young girl.

Nightbitch

Amy Adams stars as a stay-at-home mother who discovers her animal instincts in the dark comedy Nightbitch. Overworked and exhausted from caring for her toddler alone, her domestic life takes a turn when something primal begins to surface within. Marielle Heller’s Nightbitch is a clever and fearless exploration of the darker and often unspoken aspects of motherhood.

You’re Cordially Invited

Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell go head to head in a bridal battle in the new comedy You’re Cordially Invited. When two weddings are accidentally booked on the same day at the same venue, chaos breaks out as each family fights to preserve their special day, led by the father of the bride (Ferrell) and sister of the other bride (Witherspoon).

Companion

Companion invites you to experience a new kind of love story. During a weekend away at his lakeside estate, the death of a billionaire sets off a train of events for Iris and her friends. This psychological romantic thriller stars Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets), Jack Quaid (The Boys) Lukas Gage (You), and Megan Suri (Never Have I Ever).

Paying For It

Paying For It delves into the nuances of sex, love and intimacy against the backdrop of 1990s Toronto. Sook-Yin Lee wrote and directed this adaptation of her ex Chester Brown’s best-selling graphic novel of the same name, about Chester and Sonny (a slightly fictionalized version of Lee)— and the events that unfold when Chester began sleeping with sex workers. The film stars Dan Beirne (Priscilla, Ginny & Georgia), emerging actor Emily Lê (Riceboy Sleeps), and acclaimed activist, author and performer Andrea Werhun.
