I’ve never been one to go to the Kits Beach meat market. Sure it’s a beautiful spot to swim and soak up the sun, but it’s always full of greased up douche bags who give my pasty thighs a dirty look. I don’t want to feel guilty while I’m sneaking whiskey on the beach, and neither should you. Here are a few alternatives that don’t draw the same amount of people. Hit them up this summer and you’ll be wondering why you ever bothered heading to Kits!
Spanish Banks
Probably the most obvious choice of the less-populated beaches, Spanish Banks is a common hang out in the summer time. It’s not nearly as busy and showy as its neighbour, Kits, though it does draw a fair crowd. The farther you walk west, the less people will be there. There are some beach volleyball courts, if you’re feeling athletic. There are also a lot of grassy areas for Frisbee, soccer, or bocce ball. Feel free to lug along a BBQ and throw a little party for you and your friends. Just be sure to have a DD, as it’s a long walk from civilization.
Second/Third Beach
Second and Third Beach are by no means secrets, they’re just a little off the beaten path. Hop on your bike and treat yourself to a ride around Stanley Park, stopping at one of these beaches on the way. Surround yourself with the outdoors while you watch the joggers go by on the seawall. Feel free to go wading if you’re feeling hot, or hit up the outdoor pool at Second Beach. Second Beach has become a bit of a hipster hot spot, so don’t be surprised if you see some ridiculous beachwear. It makes for good people watching.
Crab Beach – Aka Portside Park
Nestled behind Gastown, Crab Beach has a stunning view of the North Shore and the dock yards. It’s pretty easy to get there – just walk along Alexander Street until you hit Main Street. Walk over the small overpass and you’re there! A lot of people seemingly don’t know it exists, and others are put off by its proximity to the Downtown Eastside. You might see some shady characters there, but it’s not to be avoided. For a perfect Sunday afternoon, head down there for a picnic after a few Caesars on a Gastown patio.
New Brighton Park
Farther to the east is New Brighton Park, right behind the PNE and Hastings Racecourse. Watch tankers float lazily by as you soak up the sun and the quiet atmosphere of this East Van staple. Home to an outdoor pool, this expansive park offers lots of space to indulge in some outdoor activities. It’s mostly grass; don’t go expecting to lie on the sand all afternoon. This park attracts a lot of local families, so you may have to watch your sailor’s mouth or face some angry parental wrath. Be sure to walk out onto the pier for a little toe dipping!
