8 pm Royal Stompbox Presents: The Night James Brown Saved Boston @ The Royal Cinema, 608 College St. On April 5, 1968 – just 24 hours after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. – James Brown was scheduled to play the Boston Garden. The performance almost didn’t happen, but Boston mayor Kevin White, recognizing Brown’s popularity among black and white audiences, decided that canceling it might do more harm than good. 50 years since this infamous night, Royal Stompbox, with the blessing of Brown’s estate and the film’s director David Leaf, presents this essential document of music and civil rights history in America. $12 advance tickets available online.
