Toronto artist Evan Munday has promised to tweet one portrait of a missing or murdered woman to Stephen Harper every day. He recently tweeted; “Our PM said an inquiry into the missing women ‘isn’t really high on our radar.’ So I’m trying a small thing to make it higher. #MMIW”. Since Monday, he has tweeted out a portrait to the Prime Minister each day, and will continue to do so until the PM calls for an inquiry.
Indigenous women are going missing and being murdered at a rate so high it has been dubbed what Amnesty International called “a national human rights crisis.” Indigenous women in Canada are four times more likely to be murdered than non-Indigenous women. Munday joins thousands of others across the country in calling for a national public inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women focused on “exposing the nature of this violence and on ensuring government and police accountability for an effective and coordinated response.”
