Presented by The RUDE Collective, Black. Nuance. Shade. is the ultimate an art show slash late night dance party. RUDE (Real Unapologetic Diverse Expression) is a collective of individuals whose main objective is to create positive spaces for queer folks (especially queer people of colour). It is an affirmative, positive response to the reaction to queer culture by the mainstream gay culture.
This multi-sensory art show will explore the nuances of Queer Black identity, featuring local and international Queer Black artists. It attempts to showcase some of the intricacies, the beauty and the struggles that come with the black queer lens. Through stimulating the audience visually – combined with added scent and sound stimulants – Black. Nuance. Shade. will take you on a journey that is equal parts limitless as it is a taste of some of the artists’ realities.
Featured Artists include Mikael Owunna (a queer Nigerian-Swedish American photographer), Brianna Roye (a Toronto photographer who identifies as a queer androgynous woman), Jah Grey (a self-taught photographic artist primarily focused on portraiture), Kawaaal (a mixed media artist, from Toronto), and Oluseye, who uses photo-based social installations. Plus, there’ll be two surprise guest performances!
Black. Nuance. Shade takes place on Friday June 16th at Blank Canvas (890 St. Clair W). Grab your tickets here.
