Name: Tasha Cullingham
School: Dalhousie University
Program, Year: Psychology, 4th Year
What was the deciding factor that made you choose this school? Good psych program, the awesome East Coast-y feel of Halifax
What do you love most about your school? The classes, yay summer dance class for credit!
Are you involved in any extracurricular activities? I am in a sorority, Omega Pi, which is fun and a great way to meet people you wouldn’t get a chance to meet otherwise. I also take classes with Dal dance (classes are just 25 dollars a discipline per term), and I volunteer at the IWK (a children’s hospital) and at a psych lab at Dal.
What’s your best advice on how to meet new friends? Be shameless in your friendliness. Some stereotypes about the east are total garbage, e.g I have never met a fisherman. Some, however, are pretty legit. The east coast is a chatty, chatty place.
Where’s your favourite place for:
A cheap dinner:
Your Father’s Moustache (5686 Spring Garden Road), especially in the summer, they have an awesome patio.
Brunch: Smitty’s
Lunch: Heartwood (6250 Quinpool Road)
Coffee: Just Us (1678 Barrington Street) BEST Vegan hot chocolate EVER.
What bars do you frequent the most? Pogue (1581 Barrington Street) and The Split Crow (1855 Granville Street)
Where do you go if you wanna dance? Pacifico. (1505 Barrington Street) Sweet music, not super grungy.
Any party nights we should know about?Every day somewhere, but a few things I should say:
Split Crow Power Hour Thursdays and Saturday afternoons
Reflections Cabaret (5184 Sackville St.) Student Night Friday – free cover and 2 dollar drinks with a student card
Do you have a favourite clothing store? Biscuit General Store (1661 Argyle St.) on Argyle.
Where’s your favourite place to study? Coburg coffee. (6085 Coburg Road) They’re a little overpriced but have a really nice atmosphere.
Do you have a hairdresser / salon you’d recommend? I cut my own, it saves money. (I recommend it, but only if you’re okay with a few mess ups along the road to a nice cut.) If you don’t want to be that daring, I recommend Kara’s from what I have heard!
What has been your favourite class thus far? That’s a toughy. Psych wise- Child Psychopathology. Fun Wise – Beginner Jazz summer term.
What class are you looking forward to most this year? International development experimental learning Canada – it’s a class where you have a volunteer placement and go to class once a week and get a credit
What’s your best piece of first-year advice? Look into things! Make sure you are taking classes that you like, and if you’re going to fail, a class DROP IT! It’s a waste of money but a W is better than an F. I know some people that really messed around.
What did you learn the hard way? Attending classes is actually worth your time, there may not be attendance points and you may be too hungover to see, but show up and get the prof to like you!
Any misconceptions you want to clear up about your school? Dal’s not a slacker school. Drunkard school yes… slacker school no.
Before you graduate, you are going to make sure you: Get my ass down to Cape Breton ( it’s a four hour drive, but apparently worth renting a car for)
What do you love most about your university town/city? How close everything is without feeling small, you really can walk everywhere, but it doesn’t have a small town feel to it
Best memory so far? A failed attempt to have a bubble wrap strobe light party with my friends in our room. ( Don’t buy strobe lights at Walmart…just don’t.) Also the pub crawls. One time we were on one, and there were guys dressed in full Stormtrooper costumes. My friend got so excited she jumped of out from the booth over the table, and sprained her ankle.
Got any weird /specific tip that would only apply to your school? One Saturday, get your shameless hot mess of a hungover self to the Farmers Market. There are delicious local goods, gluten free (yay) and vegan treats that you would think were made with wheat and dairy, I swear! It closes at 1 but it is soo worth it.
