For all of you who grew up reading Eloise, you know that there is something very special about sitting down in a grand ballroom to sip tea. Her Plaza is our King Eddy and while Skipardee and Weenie may not be invited, we are delighted to gift one lucky Shedoesthecity reader a table for four to enjoy The King Edward’s signature afternoon tea.
With ornate crown mouldings, ceilings that soar upwards of 20 feet and windows that could accomodate the grand entrance of a graceful giraffe, the Sovereign Ballroom at The King Edward is stately, elegant and immediately pulls you back to another era.
There aren’t many venues in Toronto that boast such a rich and glamourous history. Did you know it was in this very ballroom, in 1964, that Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor got engaged? Imagine that when you take a bite into your scone. (Which, by the way, is simply divine.)
To mark this impressive anniversary, The King Edward Hotel has also put together a small museum. Once you are done your Imperial Early Grey, take a wander to look at old photographs and read comments left in the guestbook by the likes of Britney Spears and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Ohhh, what fun!
Take your mom, take your grandma or your BFF. This is a delightful way to spend a couple of hours and it will spark interesting conversation, be it about the history of the afternoon tea ritual or stories of old Toronto.
