If you’re an emerging creative looking to hone your skills in film or comedy in 2024, the Canadian Comedy Film Igniter might be the push you need.

This new initiative from The Canadian Film Fest and The Firecracker Department encourages women and non-binary filmmakers to write, shoot and deliver a short comedy film—all in four weeks. The challenge begins with a creative prompt, and will result in a completed film at the end of the month.

To help bring their stories to life, participants will receive creative support throughout the program. Expect to refine your storytelling, filmmaking and comedy chops with skill development, mentorship and networking opportunities. It’s an excellent way for emerging creators to learn and create at the same time, with the structure and accountability of a four-week timeline.

The mentorship opportunities are invaluable—participants can receive guidance directly from Canadian industry professionals, including Firecracker Department founder Naomi Snieckus (Mr. D, Disney’s Zombies), Carolyn Taylor (I Have Nothing, Baroness Von Sketch), Vanessa Matsui (How to Fail as a Pop Star, Ghost BFF), Allana Harkin (Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Nesting),  and Wendy Litner (Popularity Papers, How to Buy a Baby).

Selected projects from The Canadian Comedy Film Igniter will screen at the Canadian Film Fest in March 2024, and all participants will receive a free festival pass, good for all screenings and industry series events.

It can be a challenge for emerging women and non-binary filmmakers to have their voices heard, and to find supportive environments that help them and their creative work thrive. Programs like this can provide passionate creators with the framework they need to push their projects to the finish line, with support along the way from people who want to see them succeed. If you want to take action in the new year, register and find a team to bring your film to life!

The Canadian Comedy Film Igniter is open to emerging Canadian women and non-binary filmmakers over 18. The deadline to register is January 19, 2024. For more information on program dates and eligibility, see their website.
