If you were walking through Nathan Phillips Square and stumbled into numerous brightly painted brains, what would you think? What conversations would be sparked?
This June, The Brain Project will place 100 giant brain sculptures throughout the downtown core. Spearheaded by Baycrest Health Sciences, with generous support from TELUS, The Brain Project is a creative initiative to get people talking about brain health: both preventative care and support for brain degenerative diseases.
Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s: almost every family has been affected by a brain disease of some kind. Baycrest Health Sciences is a global leader in geriatric residential living, research, innovation and education, with a special focus on brain health and aging. This vibrant project aims to take the issues of brain health into the forefront, for generations young and old.
Artists participating in the project include Mr. Brainwash, Gary Taxali, Karim Rashid, Janna Watson, Jill Greenberg, and many more. Outside the circle of local artists, Kim Kardashian West also painted a brain with North West. (Both weird and kinda cool.) Apparently, upon hearing of the project, Kim decided it would be a fun art project to do with her daughter. We haven’t seen it but hear there are cute little North West handprints all over the giant brain.
Here’s to a beautiful, healthy, happy, artful mind.
