The Design Exchange and Etsy Canada have joined forces to launch the DX ETSY MASTERCRAFT SERIES, a set of hands-on workshops with expert designers – and Etsy’s top-sellers – from all disciplines to teach participants the fundamentals of design.
How cool would it be to sign up for a crash course on fabric dyeing, jewelery making, lingerie basics or wood bending taught by some of the country’s most successful independent creators, in our national museum that honours excellence in design? Pretty damn cool.
Since we’re major fans of the DX and idolize Etsy Canada top sellers, we decided to jump on board as a media partner.

Etsy Mastercrafter: Sarah Norwood
Wednesday, November 11, 6-9pm
Workshop: Learn lingerie basics and how to sew a soft bra and matching pair of knickers. Sarah will walk students through the step by step process of making a pair of her signature looks, so that you can make your own!

Etsy Mastercrafter: Julie Sinden
Saturday, November 14, 12-4pm
Workshop: An introduction to the world of fabric dyeing, using fibre reactive dyes, which are safe, non-toxic and very easy to use. Using cotton fabric, students will learn to mix, apply and cure the dyes. Some colour theory and surface design will also be explored, so students can create their own colour palette and both solid and patterned fabric.
About Julie: A lover of all things textile-related since she was young, Julie attended the Kootenay School of the Arts in British Columbia, where she majored in Fibre. She began her business, Julie Sinden Handmade, in 2005 as a line of boiled wool hats and accessories.

Etsy Mastercrafter: Danielle Singer
Wednesday, November 18, 6-9pm
Workshop: Participants explore the basics of jewellery making, learning how to make a basic chain charm bracelet or a signature style of Dolorous Jewelry. Skills include jewellery basics including tool use, production skills, and design tips. Each participant will be given the materials and tools needed to make one or two pieces of jewellery of their own design that they will be able to take home with them!
About Danielle: Dolorous Jewelry is a collection of sculptural handmade pieces designed and produced by Danielle Singer. Inspired by historical and specifically Medieval accessories, Danielle’s work is known for its signatures styles of body chains and hand jewellery.

Etsy Mastercrafter: Tim Richards
Saturday, Nov 21, 12-4pm
Workshop: Learn the basics of bending wood using steam in a class designed for both the absolute beginner and those with some woodworking experience. Students will learn what we look for in good bending stock, how to set up forms and jigs, and how we design pieces for the capabilities and limitations of steam bending, all while making your own handheld version of our popular Lapin mirror.
About Tim: Tim Richards is an experimental furniture and lighting designer, sculptor, and woodworker. At South Street Boatbuilders, process mirrors and draws from experience; starting at the grand scale of concept, culture and history, works are refineddown to the very finest details of the tactile experience.
