Any organization that involves shiny leotards, gold cowboy boots, and disco balls is an organization I want something to do with. Throw in five intelligent, foxy ladies with a penchant for fake beards, Bollywood, and Judith Thompson, and I’ll follow you anywhere. So I followed She Said What to The Comedy Bar on Bloor West. (Segue: why are comedy bars always in basements?) for their sold-out performance, She Said What I Like About You. Seated in a back-room theatre packed with rowdy fans hollering their approval and rushing out to re-fill pitchers during intermission, the ladies put on a hilarious show.

I call their brand of comedy intelligent, witty, and culturally cutting. They just call it funny. The show has the vibe of hanging out at a house-party where everyone just happens to be really, really hilarious. The girls came together at Queen’s University, where they were studying topics all over the map, and this diversity results in a show that draws from influences wide-ranging and seemingly random, until they come together in skits that boast an originality of tone and execution. From samba-seizures to white-trash talent tryouts, Celine Dion impressions to Captain Highliner, these ladies know how to throw a party. Throwing ‘bows through a crowded bar to sit down with them backstage, talk ranges from anti-feminist social stigma to overstaying your welcome at Supermarket. Spend an evening chugging beers and choking on laughs at one of their shows, and you’re sure to be quoting them all summer long. They’ll be touring for the next few months, then back in August for another show at The Comedy Bar, on the 21st and 22nd. Be sure not to miss it.
