What I’m Wearing:
A tunic dress, the perfect transition item from summer to fall, because you can wear it so many ways. This one is a TRAMP piece I bought at Century 21 in Manhattan, which I paired with hose from Urban Outfitters (their tights last forever!)
– I covet cardigans, so it was natural to want to layer this oversized cardigan, a classic from The Gap
– My necklace is from Tiffany & Co. It was one of my first pieces of designer wear.
– Even though I love heels, flats and boots are the most practical choice to wear on campus. These classic, pointy toed ones, from Nine West, have the sharp, androgynous lines I love.
– When it’s warm I always wear my hair up (you don’t want to see it when the humidy gets to it!)
– What I love about this outfit is the variation in cuts and fabrics. Even though the main colour is black, it doesn’t look boring, and it makes it much easier to add a pop of colour, like my turquoise bobble ring or these ’80’s purple hoop earrings I bought at a vintage shop
Favourite outfit for a night on the town: I believe that shoes make or break an outfit, black is always an essential in my wardrobe, and mixing fabrics is a must; I love pairing black skinny trousers with a slinky printed top, a metallic clutch and sky-high stilettos.
What is your must have fall fashion item: boyfriend-fit clothing.
Tell us what fashion item you can’t stand: I can’t stand the whole “punk” look. Rock is fine; goth is fine; punk, I can’t stand.
Favourite bar to go to: Downtown: The London Taphouse; On Hess Street: Che; in Westdale: The Snooty Fox.
Favourite place to dance : Absinthe on a Wednesday night for Motown
First date game plan: The Art Gallery of Hamilton (free the first Friday of every month) and then coffee and brownies at My Dog Joe in Westdale; or Martini’s at the Bean Bar (the selection is insane!)
What is your most typical at home meal?: oatmeal in the morning, grilled tofu with tomato & basil sauce in the afternoon
What are you listening to on your iPod right now? Santogold
Best food to sneak into the library/lecture hall. Starbursts: when you suck on them, they last longer, so you don’t have to make as much noise opening more.
One thing you can’t stand in a roommate : Clingyness
Favourite thing you’re decorating your new place with? The Andy Warhol prints I just bought and had framed
Best cheap way to spruce up a space? Photos, photos, photos
Favourite place to study: In a really noisy café with good music. I can’t study in silence.
What are you reading right now? Elephant Man by Christine Sparks
Favourite newly discovered neighbourhood: Locke Street in Hamilton.
Course you would recommend to peers: Anything instructed by Dr. Ouellette
Course you are most looking forward to this year: English 3AA3: Theories of Gender and Sexuality
One thing you wish you knew before starting university: Change is inevitable
What’s the best thing about your particular university? McMaster’s newspaper, The Silhouette, old architecture, the large scale of the student centre, the high level of school spirit
What’s the most annoying thing about your particular university? The high level of school spirit
Any warnings? Even if you have a gym membership, trying jogging outside the first three weeks of January; the gym will be so packed you won’t even get a machine with all the new people there that make New Years resolutions to start exercising
Any additional tips? Squeeze as many hours into a day possible; get up early, go to bed late. University usually only happens once; make every day worth it. Also, if you don’t like it now, you better learn to love coffee; it’ll be your best friend many, many mornings.
