The gift ambush is toxic. You have the discussion in November that you’re not going to exchange gifts, only to find yourself being presented with a gorgeous little package and nothing to offer in exchange.
If you’re organized, now’s the time to pick up a few things to keep on-hand to mitigate such disasters – grab a few swanky bottles, some lux soaps or a few ornaments that you can gift in a pinch. Worst case: you use them yourself.
Even if it’s obvious that you didn’t buy them a gift, don’t disclose “I didn’t get you anything” or remind them “I thought we agreed not to get each other anything?” – it will only hurt their feelings and make them want to snap the present right back out of your hands.
Instead, tell a teeny white lie that you forgot their gift at home, or it’s not wrapped yet, or you’re on the hunt for one last thing to top it off. Then, be extra appreciative of their gift and hustle to get something to them immediately.
