The transition from fall to winter can be a bleak, dark time for some, but this Sunday, on the eve of the Winter Solstice, Red Pepper Spectacle Arts is beckoning the return of the sun with their annual handmade street celebration.
Now in its 25th year, the Kensington Market Winter Solstice Festival features a lantern-lit procession, theatrical performances, roving giant puppets and stilted dancers, and concludes with a fiery finale at Alexandra Park (Bathurst and Dundas, behind Scadding Court).
This year’s performers include host Rosina Kazi of LAL, the Samba Squad,Shadowland Youth Theatre, Native Men’s Residence, Richard Underhill and the Kensington Horns, Maracatu Mar Aberto, Spirit Wind and Eagle Women Singerz, hand drummer Isaiah Cada, A-Rhythmics, the Solsticks, alumni from the Centre for Indigenous Theatre, Jenni-Lea and Circle Sing, New Model Circus Army, and many, many more.
Festivities kick off at 6:30 p.m. at the corner of Oxford and Augusta.
