Hundreds if not thousands of people crowded the streets surrounding the Princess of Wales Theatre this past Sunday, eagerly awaiting the arrival of Harry Styles, Emma Corrin and David Dawson (but mostly Harry) for the world premiere of My Policeman at TIFF. And they were not disappointed.
Styles, who was in Toronto last month for two packed concerts at Scotiabank Arena, was more than happy to sign autographs and snap photos with the throngs of fans who were desperate to lock eyes with the actor-singer-pop sensation. It was a loud, chaotic, and totally joyous TIFF moment. We were, however, more entranced with Emma Corrin’s arrival. The British actress wowed the screaming crowds with a body suit and bleach-blonde pixie cut. We love seeing glam on the red carpet, but striking a pose on the streetcar tracks, with an emptied King West behind, in this smokin’ hot outfit, is totally badass.
A beautifully crafted story of forbidden love and changing social conventions, My Policeman follows three young people—policeman Tom (Harry Styles), teacher Marion (Emma Corrin), and museum curator Patrick (David Dawson)—as they embark on an emotional journey in 1950s Britain. Flashing forward to the 1990s, Tom (Linus Roache), Marion (Gina McKee), and Patrick (Rupert Everett) are still reeling with longing and regret, but now they have one last chance to repair the damage of the past. Based on the book by Bethan Roberts, director Michael Grandage carves a visually transporting, heart-stopping portrait of three people caught up in the shifting tides of history, liberty, and forgiveness.
The off-screen chemistry between Styles and Corrin is noticeable, and while we weren’t able to snag a ticket for the sold-out premiere, we have been watching the trailer, featuring Cat Power’s “Sea of Love” (one of our all-time favourite songs) on repeat.
“I’m so happy to be here at TIFF and I’m honoured to be part of My Policeman. I think it’s a beautiful film with a lot of heart and a lot of soul. I’m excited for people to see it. I hope it welcomes discussion,” said Corrin, who also addressed the LGBTQ themes in the film.”I think people go in expecting to learn about that time of history, but really we’re forced to reflect upon how much progress there is still to be made today for the gay community.”
My Policeman will open in theatres on October 11 and will be available globally on Prime Video starting November 4, 2022.
