Toronto is a city that loves food, and while media outlets, rogue bloggers, and critics scramble (pun) to be the first seated at the latest no-reso, the passion for and meaning behind culinary creation often gets lost. Enter Food Will Never Break My Heart.
An independent glossy magazine created by two young women, Colleen Kirley and Olivia Zuccherato, the journal is an ode to the different ways we interact with food. Instead of focusing on straight reviews, gastronomy is filtered through experience, capturing the inevitable intermingling of the two. A couple relive their first date at Sardhina, our associate editor Sara recounts how the taste of stuffed peppers reminds her of a fling in Israel, Rudy Lee finds a favourite dinner companion in himself (and a loud, pint-sized stranger), and a couple plays twenty questions on a literal blind date at O.Noir. Even the recipes recall relationships, from Dufflet’s truffles for a broken heart to Olivia’s mom’s cinnamon buns and a chef couple’s gnocchi.
Other features include an interview with the men behind Bellwood’s Brewery, photographer Thomas Van Der Zaag captures love affairs with food, and Sarah Jean Harrison’s foray into the world of canning.
The most striking aspect of the magazine is the design. The cover features a photo of recent Weeknd video girl Elissa Mielke, and inside, there are beautiful food shots of a charcuterie board put together by former Marben meat man Evan Desjardins, mouthwatering illustrations, and display copy spelled out in that most controversial of herbs, cilantro.
It’s amazing to see young talent in Toronto come together to create a fantastic project, and Food Will Never Break My Heart is a beautiful testament to their hard work and unabashed love of food. SCRUMPTIOUS. Buy a copy here.
