There is something extremely soothing (and oddly erotic) about watching Yuula Benivolski’s hands smooth down wrinkled paper.
Her latest art installation at Art Metropole builds on the concept of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, or ASMR: “Characterized as a pleasurable tingling in the head, scalp, spine and limbs, resulting from exposure to specific auditory and visual triggers.”
“When you watch me smooth down the wrinkles, you imagine my hands on your body, and everything slows down.”
If you’ve ever gone to pleasure country over a simple shampoo at the hairdresser, you will have some inkling of what ASMR is capable of. This Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Art Metropole (1490 Dundas St W.) relax as Yuula hypnotically turns the pages of ten different books. Also, check out her single channel video, comprising ten works, showcasing at Art Metropole until June 8. Let her smooth away your jangled nerves.
