What a delicious pleasure it was to catch up to the #YouAreWelcome food truck yesterday at Queen’s Park. It was also a great excuse to convince my beefy life partner to come home for lunch so we could have a picnic in one of the city’s prettiest little nooks.

I’ve been looking forward to tasting these awesome-sounding fusion dishes since I heard about the #YouAreWelcome truck a few weeks ago.

The quest was to bring the First Nations palette into the automated culinary convenience of the boutique food truck. A challenging proposition considering we’d be eating elk.

In turns out, there was nothing to fear. Be it the subtle mastery of Chef David Wolfman, who travels with the truck or the simple perfection of the dishes, good decisions were made throughout.

foodtruck2My favourite turned out to be the curried elk! Who knew? Served alongside sweet potato in pastry, it was so tender it almost fell off the fork. Luckily, back into the perfect scrumptious elk gravy.

The smoked turkey chili was right up there. It had the chunks-to-sauce ratio, which is important, and an unexpected spice that was just right.

Not to be outdone, the Nish Kebobs were lightly drizzled in balsamic and birch and very tender. We finished off our picnic with some wild blueberry bannock action, and legitimately considered getting seconds…of everything, which we would have done if it wasn’t for our crammed work schedules.

foodtruck1Part of a really cool initiative to raise awareness for the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation (MNCFN), the #YouAreWelcome food truck will be out in full force all week (until Sunday). Make sure to look for the #YouAreWelcome crew in blue shirts who are handing out $5 gift cards!
