This fall, experience compelling performances broadcast live from The Metropolitan Opera in NYC. Starting this week, Canadian audiences can take in eight shows from the world-class opera on the big screen at Cineplex locations nationwide. Whether you’re an opera enthusiast or interested in attending for the first time, The Met: Live in HD is making opera accessible for all.
The performances featured in this season of The Met: Live in HD range from bold new offerings to beloved classics. One show we’d love to highlight is Grounded, an opera that delves into the ethical, psychological and emotional challenges posed by modern warfare, starring Canadian mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo.
D’Angelo has been making waves in the music world— her album enargeia was named the best Canadian classical album by the CBC in 2021, and she’s received praise from the New York Times, NPR, and more.
She takes her vocal prowess to the stage in Grounded as Jess, a hot-shot fighter pilot faced with an unplanned pregnancy. As she adjusts to a new role in Las Vegas, operating a Reaper drone halfway around the world, she struggles with the pressure to be the perfect soldier, the perfect wife, and the perfect mother all at the same time.
Based on the play by George Brant, Grounded is composed by Two-time Tony Award–winner Jeanine Tesori. Fellow Canadian Yannick Nézet-Séguin will take the podium as conductor. With high-tech staging, using a vast array of LED screens, viewers will see a variety of perspectives on the action, including the drone’s predatory view from high above.
Grounded will be broadcast live from The Met to Cineplex locations across Canada on October 19, with encores on November 9, 11, and 13. Check out the show at a theatre near you, support Canadian talent and immerse yourself in the art and grandeur of opera this fall.
