In conjunction with the Quebec Drama Federation (QDF), McGill’s Department of History and Classical Studies presents an annual Classics play for those who love the drama and tragedy inherent to Ancient Greek, Latin, and Italian poetry and writing. (And also, let’s be real, for those who want a neat, “culturally-inclined” evening out—on the cheap.)
This year’s performance features an English translation of Sophocles’ Philoktetes, the story of a young Greek archer who participated in the Trojan War (you know, the war with the big horse full of people). The play is directed by McGill’s very talented Elizabeth Ten-Hove, with live, original music by David Oppenheim and a wonderful cast of both undergraduate and graduate students. Yes, rest assured: there will be high-octave choir singing, fabulous costumes, and quaint scenery.
Evening presentations of Philoktetes take place at the MIA/Montréal arts interculturel (3680 Jeanne-Mance) at 8pm until Saturday February 23, 2013. There will be one matinee performance on Saturday the 23 at 2pm. Tickets are $12, and only $8 for students, seniors, and members of the QDF.
