In an attempt to spruce up my boring balcony on a budget, I found this idea for mason jar lanterns quick, easy and cheap! It really changes the atmosphere of the deck into something more warm and inviting. Plus, I think nothing says summer like a fire. And I’m not lighting one on my balcony, because I’m not crazy.

Supplies
Mason Jars – these can be bought cheaply at Home Hardware or you can use old spaghetti jars
1 Nail
Hammer
100% cotton string or scrap fabric
Oil – either indoor non-toxic oil, olive oil (which you can use inside) or citronella oil (again, Home Hardware.)

Hammer a hole through the lid of the jars, using the nail, that is big enough to fit your cotton string.

Cut a length of string (2 times the height of the jar) and fill the jar under half way full.

Dip the string in oil so that it can soak it up and then push it through the hole.

Put the lid on and VOILA! You can light it on fire for a great patio lantern.
