It’s not every day that Mad Men costume director Janie Bryant compliments your coat. But it’s not every day that you’re standing next to Mad Men costume director Janie Bryant in a beautiful mink-trimmed raw silk number from Magwood Vintage, sipping a Negroni at the Carlu in celebration of the LCBO’s Classic Cocktail menu. Far from an average Thursday night. Ms. Bryant cut an elegant swathe through the well-dressed crowd in a gorgeous, bright red one-shoulder gown, and entertained guests with tales of her first days working on Mad Men. She said she knew she had made it when a friend called from San Francisco on Halloween and said “I just saw a Don Draper walking down the street!”
After she spoke, guests mingled and enjoyed 60s-era appetizers like foie gras sandwiches, and sipped to-die-for cocktails, mixed up with acrobatic flair by the bartenders. Our favourite was the Negroni, garnished with a charred orange peel. Sipping in the crowd, we spotted blogger Anita Clarke, Ainsley Kerr and Flare’s Mosha Lundstrom-Halbert (both in fur-trimmed finery) among other Toronto notables. Also rocking great sixties styles? All our fantastic She Does The City contest winners, who got to bring a classy date and celebrate all things Mad Men.
