A whirlwind adventure across Asia, unapologetic debauchery, moving sentiments about belonging, and K-pop—Joy Ride has it all, and it’s the raunchy, wild, R-rated comedy you’re looking for to kick off your summer.
The film stars Ashley Park (Emily in Paris), Sherry Cola (Good Trouble), Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and Sabrina Wu as four unlikely friends who embark on a once-in-a-lifetime international adventure. When Audrey’s business trip to Asia goes sideways, she enlists the aid of Lolo, her irreverent, childhood best friend who also happens to be a hot mess; Kat, her college friend turned Chinese soap star; and Deadeye, Lolo’s eccentric cousin.
Their bonds as friends are tested as they set out on an epic mission to find Audrey’s birth mother. The experience becomes a journey of friendship, belonging, and wild debauchery that reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are. The four leads have effortless chemistry, and the laughs are non-stop—this is one to go see in the theatre. Expect a hilarious and unapologetically explicit adventure, but underneath a thick layer of raunchy humour, Joy Ride is a heartfelt story about identity and belonging.
The film is also receiving praise for its meaningful representation, not only with four Asian women and non-binary leads, but with a team of Asian women behind the camera: director Adele Lim, and writers and producers Cherry Chevapravatdumrong and Teresa Hsiao.
“It’s important for the next generation to see that there are writers that look like you, directors that look like you, producers that look like you, that this is a space you can and should inhabit,” Lim told MSNBC’s Katie Phang. “Because without all the people behind the camera, the people making decisions, the gatekeepers, our stories really don’t get the kind of allyship and support that we want.”
An incredibly important sentiment, and an incredibly chaotic ride.
Joy Ride is in theatres starting July 7. Watch the trailer below:
