Even after becoming good at something, it’s still a great benefit to take some lessons from the pros. The same can be said for our canine family members who, despite being very good little boys, are still overcoming a few obedience-related hurdles.
When Bennie and Junior were first invited to Purina PawsWay to attend Purina Pro Plan Doggie Kindergarten, I was pretty stoked, but also a little nervous. A part of me looked forward to making the trip to PawsWay. (Have you been? It’s one of our favourite puppy-friendly gems in the city.) But the rest of me immediately started trouble-shooting worst-case scenarios consisting of growling, biting and indoor accidents.
Luckily, everything worked out great! We were met by our gracious hosts at the door and started into our tour of PawsWay. Since dogs are as welcome here as people, this part was fun for everybody. There was a chart for comparing human to dog years, and even a scale for weighing our furry friends!
We also learned about remarkable pets who actually saved their owners’ lives and about the various meet-up groups that convene at PawsWay monthly for hangin’ and sniffin’, including pugs. It should also be noted that there’s a yearly Halloween meet-up where ALL the pugs wear costumes. (You’re welcome for the visual.)
Over coffee and baked goodies, we got the cold hard facts about Purina Pro Plan. From my experience, most dog owners are hesitant to switch brands because of the adjustment period required (and who knows if it will be much better anyway?) But boy, did Purina Pro Plan make a great case. These guys have been working on getting the formula right for over 50 years and many of the coolest dogs in the world (including most Westminster finalists) are already onboard.
We also got a chance to sign the boys up for Mypuppy.ca! I wish I had known about this program sooner, as it helps puppy parents keep track of EVERYTHING, from pup’s milestones and photos to veterinary appointments. There is also an extensive database of puppy-related articles, resources and videos; it’s very cool!
While my guys are no longer spring chickens, this was a great experience, and we realized that taking them to classes is a great way for them to hang around other dogs in a controlled environment. It’s also important to refresh obedience training as pups can get rusty (LAZY) over time.
However, this program would be especially beneficial to first time dog owners and puppies. The classes offer a goldmine of information about everything from nutrition to training with zero snark. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, and the trainers are happy to take time out from the class to answer individual questions and provide tips specific to your pup. Most of all, it’s super fun for pups and parents alike!
CONTEST!
We want to hook one animal lovin’ reader with a 6-month supply of Purina Pro Plan, valued at $300! To enter, RT: “Woof @Shedoesthecity, my pup and I would love to win our favourite kibble from @ProPlanCanada!”
In the spirit of Purina PawsWay and continued education, here are some of the FUN FACTS we learned during our visit:
- The Canadian winner of the Westminster Dog Show is fed Pro Plan.
- Purina Pro Plan has real meat as the #1 ingredient (unlike most kibble out there).
- Not all dogs want to make new friends as they get older and that’s OKAY, it’s not taking away from their quality of life.
- Some dogs are just bullies, especially if they’re young and unfixed (dogs, they’re just like us!)
- Purina has been making dog food for over 85 years. WOWZERS!
- A dog can dehydrate with just 10% water loss!!!
- Our furry monkeys are even tinier than we thought! Bennie weighs 5.4 lbs and Junior weighs 4.2 lbs.
