So, all smart people know the library rules. We know this, right, smart people of Toronto? (“Affirmative” – SPs of T.O.)

But what maybe none of us–smart-os or otherwise–knew was that the library is not only a great place for quiet contemplation, reading and borrowing books, research, studying, working or winding down after a busy week, it’s also a hotbed of activity! Carefully planned and curated activity specific to the community each branch is located in. I was browsing the Programs and Classes area of their website and was pretty blown away by the variety and quality of programs and classes on offer, and all for FREE! A sampling:

LGBTQ Improv Workshop for Youth 13-19
This Saturday, December 21st at the North York Central Library (5120 Yonge St), hilarious local stand up Danz Altvater is running a queer-friendly comedy workshop for LGBTQ teens and their allies.

Stress Management Through Restorative Meditation
This time of year can be craaaaazy stressful. Why not unwind by taking out a sexy book and enjoying some gentle stretching and guided meditation? Perfect for overall wellness, this is a recurring workshop at the Highland Creek library.

Laughter Yoga
Speaking of wellness, can you even imagine how freaking zen it would be to have the job of “Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher”?? Carlos Gongora can, because he is one. Settle in for 60 minutes of yogic breathing and laughter exercises next Monday, December 23rd (and on recurring dates from then) at the Eatonville library.

Basic Computer Skills
Take your grandma out for a nice lunch and then show her how that laptop your Mom got her works.

Finding Your Roots At The Library
Anyone else obsessed with genealogy?? The Toronto Reference Library is. Learn how to delve into your family’s past and uncover your personal history there, starting March 19.

Resume Strategies for the Online Job Search
Tired of applying for literally hundreds of jobs online and not hearing back, EVER? Stop the madness by attending this workshop on January 11th at the Brentwood library. Now there’s a dedicated team player who knows how to lead but can follow when necessary!

Sister Writes–Creative Writing Program for Women
The Bloor-Gladstone library hosts this weekly creative writing class for aspiring female writers. Over the course of several sessions, participants develop their writing, pitching and presenting skills and together make a magazine to showcase their work. Like, hello, this is perfect. And free! And features a variety of working writers each week sharing their wisdom and experience! And it probably smells so much like old books in there!! Check the above link or visit sisterwrites.com for more info.

There’s also PA Day crafts for kids, a whole slew of helpful financial resources, information for those new to Canada and something called “Tea and Murder,” which is so freaking intense and laid back simultaneously that I can barely handle it. Have a search and a browse and figure out which FREE reading series or author talk, or film group or introduction to modern art is for you! There’s honestly so much going on I can’t believe it–support your local libraries, guys, they’re a gift.
