I wish that Girls Rock Camp was around when I was a kid. How sweet would that have been? One-on-one music lessons with inspiring female role models, teaching me that rocking out is all about attitude, not gender. I’d have formed a tight-knit little band with other girls ages 8-16, made love ballads about our schoolyard crushes and righteous anthems about boycotting homework. On the last day of camp, we’d have performed for friends, family, and starry-eyed Girls Rock Camp fans!
I’d like to think my personal journey to super-rock-stardom would have been exponentially accelerated if I had been part of Girls Rock Camp (still working on it). Well, lovely readership of SDTC, we have the oppourtunity to help out our young generation of future female rock stars!
This summer, Girls Rock Camp will be held the weeks of July 14th to 20th, and August 11th to 17th at The Tranzac. Last year’s camp had a whopping 15 bands of rhythmically inclined tiny women. So where do you come in? This organization relies on volunteers, and they have just announced their open positions for 2014. If this sounds like something that would make your heart sing, take a look at what might be a good fit for you. Yes, they need women who possess musical abilities to be instrument instructors. However, if this is not one of your many wonderful talents, don’t fret! (PUN) They also need camp counsellors, photographers, cooks, and more!
While you’re checking out their website, cruise over to GRC’s bandcamp and take a listen to the 2013 compilation album! It will give you so much hope for the future. These will be the leading ladies of music in only a few short years, I have no doubt.
