Neon Nightz

As a local, I always thought Montreal’s reputation as a hot bed of tawdry hedonism was unfair. Neon signs blaring Danseuse Nues and Danse Contacte were part of the landscape, just because they were written in French didn’t make them any sexier. Club Supersexe’s logo was no cause for alarm – to me it was just 3 flying Lady Supermen in bikinis (I was 5, ok?).

When I got to university though, I realized how undersexed the rest of North American really is. For example, New Jersey’s so-called “booze or boobs” law means an establishment can have topless dancers or a liquor license – never both. (Fully naked dancers are out of the question.) So basically, you can either soberly watch a bunch of topless chicks dance around (weiiird), or have a drink while fully clothed women dance (i.e. a regular club).  Ok, America!

Also, in most part of the States, you can’t touch the dancers, which I guess is why my meathead friends from Vermont get so horny when they visit; they plan their entire trip around their next dance contacte. Shit, even topless breakfast is a given in this city. I guess we really are sleazy dirt bags!

Sasha Von Bon Bon and Kitty Neptune document our proud peeler past in Neon Nightz, an autobiographical play about Montreal strip clubs in the 90s. It opened to rave reviews last September in Toronto, and this week it’s playing to the hometown crowd at Mainline, as part of the Edgy Women Festival.

March 17, 18 & 19. 8pm. $20. MainLine Theatre – 3997 St Laurent.
