“I was born a bitch. I was born a painter” – Frida Kahlo
Things seem to be going all Frida Kahlo these days. Not only is The AGO currently showcasing the works of passionate lovers Frida Kahlo & Diego Riviera, with Passion, Politics & Painting, on until January 20, 2013, but the iconic painter is also being honoured at street-level with a Unibrow Bash.
While painting on my unibrow at the start of last Saturday night, I invoked the spirit of Frida Kahlo. I set off into the night, flowers tucked into my hair, skirt a’ flowin, ready for a night of fiery dancing that would possibly ending in paint-smeared makeouts. Things started out innocently enough as I boarded my chariot of The 501 Queen streetcar, heading east. A girl can dream, can’t she?
My TTC/chariot led me to meet up with the party chicas known as Tegan & Holly, who inspired unibrows of all fashion to come out and be furry together for a one-of-a-kind UniBrow Bash. The party was at former Dundas West karaoke spot The May (876 Dundas Street West) which is currently being converted over to the next hip boozy spot. A photo booth set up in the back corner allowed for shockinlgy-authentic looking portraits. Artists painted large-scale Fridas throughout the night. Music from Phil Allister and The Magic played jungalistic funky mash ups, with live drumming and vocal loops for a coconut-smashing soundtrack.
Relive the passion for yourself and go check out the work of Frida & Diego at the AGO. Tickets here.
