“Everything I do,” writes Lindsay Tapscott in her Twitter bio, “is part of a bigger plan to have Beyoncé hold me.” Lindsay is funny. Really, really funny. She’s a renaissance woman, and spends some of her time writing about fashion for SDTC. She’s also contributed to WORN Fashion Journal, and is obsessed with Joni Mitchell. Currently, she’s co-writing a sure-to-be-hilarious web series called Hot Mom, and fundraising on IndieGoGo to make it happen.
Hot Mom is about a mother-daughter duo whose relationship is best defined by “overshare.” The creator, producer and star of the series is one of Lindsay’s best friends, Katie Bird Nolan. She came to Lindsay explaining that she wanted to explore what happens when you dissolve the concept of a “line” in this kind of relationship. I’ve had the pleasure of hanging out with some of the people involved in this project and can say definitively that they are all laugh-out-loud hilarious. Nepotism is great when your best friends are all talent powerhouses.
It’s an interesting time to be making a web series. Even though the medium is growing, there still aren’t a lot of funding and grant options for web-based productions. Enter crowd funding. The crew of Hot Mom are hoping to produce their first episodes with a little help from their friends. “It’s a female-driven project, and we need more of those in the world, amIright?” says Lindsay. The crew are all tight, and talented: they’ve made names for themselves as actors, producers, writers, and comedians, and are coming together to create these web episodes as an exploration of Nolan’s comedic concept, with the goal of one day making a full-length series. As one of the two co-writers, you can expect Lindsay’s personal brand of humour to be all over this thing. Which means witty one liners to the tune of, “Sasha Fierce-ing the shit out of staying in tonight,” and “‘You look like an Olsen twin,’ says the barista at the Roncy cafe, to me, so that’s one life goal completed, next?”
Help Lindsay and co. reach their fundraising goal so we can all experience the excellence that will be Hot Mom! Says Lindsay, “It’s an opportunity to help make something really awesome happen, support Canadian arts and film, support a female-created project and win fun things like a homemade meal made by Katie herself (she’s a really good cook), a chance to get one of your ideas on the show, etc. And our undying love and affection and open invites to our Dirty Dancing slumber parties, which you totally want because we’re super fun to hang out with.”
