Do you love Julianne Moore as much as we do? In The English Teacher she plays Linda Sinclair, the titular forty-year-old unmarried high school teacher. Linda lives a modest and tidy life, but she’s easily swept up in the romanticism of great literature. Her daily routine may be the opposite of wild but her imagination is easily captured.
Things turn topsy-turvy when Linda’s former star pupil Jason Sherwood (Michael Angarano) makes a surprise return to her small town. The twenty-something writer is now an aspiring playwright in New York City and asks Linda if she would read his latest work. She quickly becomes mesmerized by his writing and rushes the play to the drama teacher (Nathan Lane) for his opinion. He is also enchanted and, in a tizzy of excitement, they head to the principal’s office and insist that Jason’s work be the major production by the drama club that year.
Just as the students are cast, things begin to get complicated. Linda’s interest in this play also begins the unravelling of her prudish and regimented life.
Quirky, charming, funny and sincere, The English Teacher is brilliantly acted by an all-star cast and brings to light the complexity of characters who figured in all our lives; those teachers who are so influential in our development yet often painted as boring and predictable.
The English Teacher opens in Toronto and Vancouver on May 31st. Watch trailer now.
