Last night marked the first time a major Basquiat retrospective has appeared in Canada. Now’s The Time features a stunning collection of large-scale works of the influential NYC artist, whose career was cut short by his untimely death at the age of 27. The works explore themes of racism, politics and social hypocrisy using salvaged materials & gaining inspiration from the urban landscape of NYC in the early 80’s.
To celebrate the life and legacy of Basquiat, AGO hosted one helluva party. Grandmaster Flash spun at Walker Court, amping up the crowd with party remixes of Red Red Wine, Suzanne Vega & Bittersweet Symphony. Even Basquiat’s sister showed up to thank the crowd. Check out gallery below.
