Opening in select theatres across Canada on February 16th, In Between is a brilliantly nuanced film about three determined Palestinian women trying to find themselves in a modern-day oppressed society built on an antiquated patriarchal system that stifles identity, growth, equality and freedom. In Between tells the story of three friends who share an apartment in the heart of Tel Aviv and find themselves doing the same balancing act between tradition and modernity, citizenship and culture, fealty and freedom. Lalia, a criminal lawyer, loves to burn off workday stress in the underground club scene. Salma, a DJ and bartender, starts a relationship with a female medical intern. And their new roommate, Nur, is a young, religious Muslim university student whose conservative fiancé is horrified by her secular friends.

“A remarkably assured, stirring and revelatory debut feature,” praises A.O. Scott of The New York Times, who gave the film a 5-star rating. Kent Turner of Film-Forward describes it as “one of the best recent films to come out of [Israel] or anywhere, for that matter. It works as both a cri de coeur and the movie equivalent of a page turner.” We couldn’t agree more. The writing and editing offers the most searingly realistic portrayal of female friendship that we’ve seen in years, with immensely moving performances that beautifully capture the unspoken bond of sisterhood.
