Hot Docs announced today that A.rtificial I.mmortality, by award-winning Toronto writer & filmmaker Ann Shin, will open the 2021 Hot Docs Film Festival. The documentary explores the latest advancements in AI—asking audiences big questions about the future of humanity. The trailer will give you chills.
Below is an excerpt from the film’s synopsis. Be warned: it may provoke an existential crisis.
“If you were able to create an immortal version of yourself, would you? This film explores the latest advancements in AI, robotics and biotech with visionaries who argue for a new age of post-biological life. As scientists point us toward a world where humans and machines merge, we have to ask ourselves will AI be the best, or the last thing we ever do?”
These are questions we do not have answers for! Thinking about how to respond is overwhelming, shocking, and sparks bizarre thoughts of an afterlife we’ve never imagined. But we’re hungry for more, and Shin’s doc shows that these freakish new realities are not beyond reach.
A.rtifiial I.mmortality will take you deep inside the mysterious world of A.I and features interviews with a variety of experts including Nick Bostrom, author of Superintelligence; Japanese roboticist, Hiroshi Ishiguro; Douglas Rushkoff, author of Team Human; Ben Goertzel, founder of Singularity.net; and Deepak Chopra, who is creating his own A.I. mind twin.
Hot Docs is one of our all-time favourite festivals; we’re so glad to see that opening night will feature a local woman whose work we absolutely admire. Shin’s fascinating film is bound to cause a stir, from how we interact with our own technology to the way we think about death.
