Amanda Crist and Carlyn Bezic make up Ice Cream, a project that melds pop, electronic music, R&B, and classic rock to produce a sweetly addictive sound. Their latest album, FED UP, is a one-two punch that uses a distinctly modern sound to undermine our modern reality, with all of its toxic trappings.
We caught up with them this week.
SDTC: What was happening in your personal life while you were writing ‘FED UP’?
Carlyn: FED UP came together over a long period of time so that’s not an easy question to answer… but I think the record deals with anger, frustration, and feminine power.
How would you describe FED UP in one sentence?
Carlyn: I wouldn’t!
What is commanding a lot of attention in your life lately?
Carlyn: MUSIC.
What have you learned about yourself in the past year?
Carlyn: So much. Shout-out to my therapist.
What is a fun, little-known fact about you?
Amanda: We started playing music together initially to be a ZZ Top cover band.
What have you connected with recently?
Carlyn: I’ve been watching lots of Agnes Varda films. They’re fierce and playful, and very feminine in a way I have a hard time explaining.
What’s the worst piece of advice you’ve been given?
Carlyn: There’s nothing specific. But I’m always relearning to trust my gut.
What is your motto at the moment?
Amanda: If it makes you happy, it can’t be that bad. Shout-out to Sheryl Crow!
What do you hope listeners take away from your latest album?
Carlyn: I hope it speaks to a shared experience between us and them.
What are the qualities you like least and most about yourself?
Carlyn: Least: I can be extremely indecisive.
Most: I love to laugh.
Rewind five years. What advice would you give yourself?
Amanda: Don’t dwell on the things that don’t serve you well.

Carlyn: The feeling that change is impossible and things are going to get worse and worse.
How do you find relief from the pressure?
Carlyn: A long run.
What unnecessary object would you love to own?
Carlyn: A Jamiroquai hat…? A Dyson vacuum…? A heart-shaped bathtub…? 8 million pairs of shoes…? It’s a long list when you start to really think about it.
What tip, technique or hack has made your life better in the past year?
Amanda: Ummm… finding satisfaction in staying in.
Carlyn: Make a list.

Carlyn: I wish the Canadian government would take reconciliation and climate change more seriously.

Carlyn: These days it’s tight, high-waisted flares.
What has surprised you lately, and how?
Amanda: The reality is unfortunately that most things aren’t surprising.
