For those who love Emily Dickinson, A Quiet Passion is a visually stunning biopic that is as intellectually thought-provoking as it is emotionally stirring, and offers audiences an intimate glimpse into the writer’s life. For those who are not versed in her work, get ready to be wowed by a true free spirit and independent thinker whose feminist politics were far beyond her years.

Directed by Terence Davies (House of Mirth, Sunset Song) and starring Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City, James White), the film received critical acclaim at its world premiere at the 2016 Berlinale and won over literary film buffs at TIFF 2017. It also features Jennifer Ehle (Fifty Shades Of Grey) and Keith Carradine (Nashville).

A Quiet Passion examines Dickinson’s life from her early days as a young schoolgirl to her later years as a reclusive artist. Although Dickinson wrote more than 2,000 poems in her lifetime, only seven were published before her premature death in 1886. She never married and became increasingly reclusive as she got older.

Richard Brody of The New Yorker lauded that the film “displays an urgent outpouring of pent-up creative energy from a director well advanced in his career but tapping into ideas, impulses, and talents that somehow have been kept under wraps throughout his decades of artistic activity.” IndieWire said, “Its firecracker dialogue is invigorating; the assured, measured compositions are equally compelling.”

We think it is a beautiful film that will inspire deep consideration of history and current gender politics, and will reinvigorate a love and appreciation for carefully chosen words in the form of conversation and poetry. This is a film made for quiet reflection; the beauty is in the tiny details.
