Want to immerse yourself in some of the most sensual and shocking French cinema ever? Plan a date to see one of the films screening in Love Exists: The Films of Maurice Pialat, a retrospective running at TIFF Bell Lightbox until December 5th.
His most famous and controversial film, A Nos Amours, will screen this Thursday (October 29) at 6:30pm.The film tells the story of precocious and promiscuous sixteen-year-old Suzanne (Sandrine Bonnaire) who thrives on pushing boundaries and uses sex as a form of escapism. It caused an uproar in France and beyond when it was released in 1983; over thirty years later, the young Suzanne remains one of the most complex and authentic teenage girl characters to ever grace the silver screen.
For those who aren’t familiar with Pialat’s shocking and beautiful work, attending this screening is a wonderful way to dive in. Celebrate French cinema and bourgeoning sexuality, fall for the films of Maurice Pialat, and feel things in your mind (and in your groin).
Love Exists: The Films of Maurice Pialat runs from October 22 until Dec 5. See full schedule and essay about the retrospective from Programmer James Quandt here.
