Beginning today, SDTC contributor & comedian Allana Reoch joins the Second City TourCo, performing on the MainStage in Toronto every week, and travelling across Canada. You can also catch some of her upcoming shows with Panacea, her sketch comedy troupe. We caught up with Allana this week.
SDTC: Fave place in all of Toronto?
AR: I love the Beaches. One of my favourite ways to spend a day alone is taking the Queen car from downtown all the way east to the beaches, and then just having a stroll along the boardwalk.
What aisle do you spend the most time in at the grocery store?
I spend a LOT of time in the produce section trying to figure out if I’m being ripped off by the price of mangos.
What would you do with a million bucks?
No joke, on the sly I am one of the cheapest people you will ever meet. I’d probably do something really boring like invest it and take comfort in the knowledge that I COULD spend money if I WANTED to.
The receipts in your wallet would indicate what?
That I buy a lot of pantyhose. Always rippin’ that ‘hose, y’know?
What was your high school yearbook pet peeve?
I suppose I’ve always felt that a book filled with pictures of the worst parts about high school would have been far more accurate – even more sentimental – than photographs of smiling sports teams.
What would you do with your time if you didn’t perform?
Be sad and lost? I’d definitely read a lot of books. I could see myself being an editor.
What makes you happy?
Honestly, spending time alone reading is one of the things in this world that makes me feel the most at peace.
What makes you cringe?
Every time I replay any conversation I’ve had with an acquaintance in my head. I cringe a lot.
What, in your opinion, is overrated?
FOMO. You don’t always have to go to the party if you don’t want to. Life hack: spending your time the way you WANT to spend it is better than dragging yourself to a social event you’re not super into because you’re worried that everyone is having fun without you. THEY ARE. THEY’RE JUST MORE FUN THAN YOU* (*me).
Person you’d most like to meet?
Despite being very outspoken, I’m really shy around people that I admire, so I don’t know if I would hope to meet any of those people for fear of being insanely withdrawn. I guess I’d like to meet Bertha Berman, the inventor of fitted sheets. I’d really just like to ask her if there’s a trick to putting them on my bed.
What is the best thing you did all week?
At a restaurant the other night a woman at the next table asked me to watch her food while she went for a cigarette, so I ate some of her fries while she was gone.
Describe your perfect Saturday:
My Perfect Saturday (or any day off) is waking up without an alarm and lying around in bed for a couple of hours. I finally slink sexily out of bed to find that the way I styled my hair the night before really still looks great after I’ve slept on it. I throw on an off the shoulder sweatshirt and very forgiving stretchy tights (on my perfect Saturday, tights are pants). I look effortlessly put-together as I wander down to Kensington Market to buy my groceries while I drink an espresso-based beverage. Turns out groceries only cost me $20 on this, My Perfect Saturday. After that, I disappear into my apartment to lie on my couch binge watching movies all day, while drifting in and out of lucid nap-dreams where I am at least 5’5’’.
Describe the funniest thing you’ve ever witnessed:
It is impossible for me to give an answer that does the weight of this question any justice, so I’ll just say that the other day I saw a man casually going about his day with a tiny, pink, child’s shoe delicately balanced on the top of his head. It was fabulous. It was fashion.
What word or phrase should we all use more?
“Hey, it’s the 90s!”
