Ring your bell – it’s bike month!
This Sunday, May 31, join the Consulate General of the Netherlands on their annual ride – and you don’t need to be 6ft, blonde or own a Batavus to do so!
The ride begins at Etienne Brule Park south along the stunning Humber River to Toronto’s Waterfront and then you will scoop down and glide along the lake North to York St, finishing your tour at Nathan Phillips Square. If you really want to get into the Dutch spirit – then grab a beer on The Black Bull patio for ultimate people watching. In a pleasantly dozy state wind over to Trinity Bellwoods or Christie Pitts but pretend you are in Vondelpark. For authenticity swap ice cream for herring. After a sloppy roll down the hill or simply making a fashion statement alongside your Old Dutch, pick up some freshly cut tulips and hit Suspect Video to rent Turkish Delight (Turks Fruit). This famous Dutch film from 1973 tells the story of hitchhiker Eric who picks up a young and sultry Olga. Steamy sex scenes go best with a little toke or two. Come 11PM – show off your toned biking legs and twist your hair into a dutch-girl crown of braids for a night with endless possibilities. Hit up Toronto’s very own Red Light at 1185 Dundas St. West. The mysterious sister of Sweaty Betty, this narrow warmly lit haunt feels like your artsy friend’s apartment. If you’ve got the munchies…no worries, you can order a pizza and have it delivered to the door.
How’s that for doing it Dutch?
…yeah…we’ve got our own little way of riding through bike month.
