Who isn’t fascinated with Andy Warhol? From his tuft of white hair to his ability to turn Campbell’s Soup into multi-million dollar pop art, the man is an absolute enigma. Andy Warhol’s: Stars of the Silver Screen, running at TIFF Bell Lightbox from October 30 to January 24, explores every facet of his life, with special emphasis on his obsession toward Hollywood stars, and his ability to create Factory Superstars.
The exhibition starts with photographs and stories from Warhol’s early childhood in working class Pittsburgh, with artifacts that span from the 1950s to the 1980s. The exhibition will be accompanied by two film programmes: Nothing Special: Andy Warhol’s Star System, a rare selection of 20 of Warhol’s 16mm films, and Liz & Marilyn: Black and White in Colour, a sidebar programme highlighting his celebrity obsessions with screen icons Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe.
We highly recommend you make a date to watch The Chelsea Girls, Warhol’s most successful film that was shot in The Chelsea Hotel in the fall of 1966, and features many of the Factory Superstars.
