Kritty Uranowski is the lead singer of Patti Cake – Toronto’s premiere party animal rock and roll band that combines the love of 60s girl groups with 90s guitar riffs. She also works as a performance coach at Girls Rock Camp Toronto and Baby Pineapple Studio. She enjoys her cat Milky Catbrera and throwing gigantic sandwich parties for all her friends. Patti Cake’s new EP, Maybe Partying Will Help will be released at The Velvet Underground on August 13th. The night will feature opening acts Hex and Pins and Needles (from Girls Rock Camp Toronto) as well as grrrl groups Come Back Barbara and Planet Creature.
We chatted with Kritty to find out about the upcoming release of Maybe Partying Will Help as well as some of her interesting life tidbits.
What meal brings you immense pleasure?
Blue steak!
Which virtue do you try to cultivate within yourself?
Patience.
The receipts in your wallet would indicate what?
That I take a lot of taxis and buy a lot of tea.
Do you have a favourite music venue?
I love the Silver Dollar Room. That has become a second home for us. I also really love The Velvet Underground, where we are having our release.
What makes you happy?
People letting me pet their dogs. Girls Rock Camp Toronto.
What makes you cringe?
Wet wool sweaters, and accidentally licking deodorant off your hand and having drymouth for days.
What project are you currently excited about?
Making some home-made videos for Maybe Partying Will Help is next on my agenda. Jammin’ as econo as possible on those ones.
What quality do you loathe most in others?
I try not to loathe anything in others anymore because usually those qualities are just things I loathe in myself.
What, in your opinion, is overrated?
Everything is rated as it needs to be rated. Except unrated versions of movies!
What is the one thing you wish you could change about yourself?
I would like to be less in need of recharging downtime. I wish I could be full energy all the time but I need so much sleep and alone time to be able to pull out the energy I need to perform.
What frustrates you the most?
The way women are still treated as second class citizens in the world.
What was the first album that really hooked you?
No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom was huge in my life. I sang it at the top of my lungs in my bedroom daily as a fifth grader.
What were you obsessed with in high school?
RENT. Total theatre nerd. Also, Dashboard Confessional.
What have you been listening to on repeat lately?
Really into this cool song “Flamingos” by a teen girl band I work with called The Overtones. They rock so hard. I love this song.
When and where do you feel your most creative?
I feel really creative when I am feeling raw. Raw happiness, raw sadness, raw heartbreak – I find I do my best work when I am picking at emotional scabs.
