When we first saw the event poster for She Was A Hurricane we were excited, a bit confused and ever so slightly titillated. We immediately got in touch with the show’s creators and starlets, burlesque babes Agatha Frisky and Bianca Boom Boom, to get the lowdown on what promises to be a very sexy and unique evening.
SDTC: What on earth is this show about?
A & B: Well! That’s a tricky question… We’ve attempted to create a piece of theatre that integrates many types of art and performance. It’s all built around a narrative journey guided by a narrator.
SDTC: But… “immersive theatre”? Is that a thing?
A & B: Yes ma’am! We’re taking things right off the stage and putting them smack-bang in the middle of the audience. We’re hoping to get right up in people’s faces, up-close and personal.
SDTC: What is the inspiration behind She Was A Hurricane?
A & B: A number of things…. multiple forms of art; literary, musical and visual. But foremost it is inspired by the life and experiences of the performers. The material is very personal and in many places dark; and uses different types of artistic expression to tell the artist’s story. We have an amazing combination of dance, music, visual art, spoken word, circus and striptease.
SDTC: Who are the artists? Tell us!
A & B: We’re lucky enough to have a cast of diverse and incredibly gifted performers. We have all met and connected in Toronto’s thriving burlesque community but with this show we really wanted to go a step further and push boundaries both for ourselves, our art form, and our audience. We have a heady cocktail of performance artists, singers, aerialists and dancers as well as an exhibit showcasing emerging Toronto photographers and artists.
SDTC: What can we expect at the show?
A & B: You can expect something Toronto, indeed Canada, has never seen before! Prepare to be confronted, intrigued, and inspired by these incredible women. Bianca Boom Boom will guide the audience through the journey and it has been a delicious opportunity for her to delve into a treasure trove of her favourite artists to support and envelope the stories of our cast. Be prepared for work from the likes of Oscar Wilde, Anais Nin, Shakespeare, John Lennon and of course John Green who was the inspiration for the title of the show. Not only do we have the show and the exhibit, we also encourage the audience to approach the artists after the show to discuss their pieces and the inspiration behind them. Toronto has never seen anything like this before and we are so excited to debut in this wonderful town!
