A few of the SDTC girls took to the Drake on a recent snowy night for Live Band Karaoke with the nice guys from Shark Week. It was a perfect trifecta of fun company, great nostalgic music and a healthy amount vodka.
Those with the moxie to take to the stage were well received (not surprisingly, the first two singers to grab the mic were from our group, Jen’s “Hole” cover was outstanding, by the way) and the precarious relationship between karaoke performer and karaoke audience was respected.
When you’re in the crowd, regardless of who is singing their heart out, you clap. You clap until your hands are raw. The person on stage is fervently nervous and caustically self-conscious, whether they show it or not. You owe it to them to show them the love.
And if you’re performing, good on you. Just be wary of talking a big game before you take to the stage. Expectations rise commensurately with your confidence. It’s not Idol try outs, so keep it light.
