Heartwarming, passionate, funny and appetizing: Chef is a total crowd-pleaser. Even the pickiest of eaters, or snobbiest cinephiles, will have a hard time not enjoying this feel-good flick.

Written, directed and starring Jon Favreau (Most liked guy in Hollywood?) this is a film made for the #nomnom crowd.  Or the estimated 200 million Instagram users who like to filter their brunch.

Favreau plays Carl Casper, a notable chef whose reputation plummets after a popular food blogger slams his cuisine. Naturally, the harsh review goes viral on Twitter: every restaurant’s worst nightmare. Online and offline drama ensues.

With little knowledge of how social media works, Chef Casper gets a tutorial by his young son, but naive to the power of the mighty “RT”, he finds his life upside down after one late night tweet. (Oops! We’ve been there.)

After hitting bottom, Casper tastes an authentic Cuban sandwich, and one bite inspires him to ditch his fancy whites for a greasy food truck and the open road. In between sizzling pork and petrol stations, father and son bond. Dad teaches son how to press a sandwich, son shows Dad how to work a smart phone. It’s pretty gosh darn cute. All of this is set to one of the best movie soundtracks this year.

This smartly crafted film also boasts a powerhouse cast: Scarlett Johansson as the sexy sommelier love interest, Sofia Vergara as the sexier ex-wife, Robert Downey Jr as the ex-wife’s sexy and rich ex-husband, John Leguizamo as the loyal line cook, Dustin Hoffman as the creativity stifling restaurant owner, and even Canadian funny man Russel Peters enters the picture as a selfie-loving cop. (Yep, Favreau is the most well-liked dude in Hollywood.)

Food trucks, sandwiches, foodie twitter wars, Robert Downey Jr: when our children ask what life was like in 2014, what was trendy and buzzy, we can direct them to Chef. It may sound cheesy, but in this case, the cheese is positively yummy. Or #yummy.

Chef will make you hungry and happy. Best enjoyed with your favourite take-out.
