This is harder than it sounds. I was getting pretty overwhelmed, and then found it useful is to determine “office” hours and stick with them. No checking emails when I’m with my family—otherwise I spend my time worrying about work stuff that can definitely wait until I’m back at my desk. 2. Give yourself transition time. When you do get back to work, it’s a tough transition generally and on a daily basis. Changing mindsets multiple times a day is draining (breast-feeding, conference call, barf on your shoulder, meeting a deadline)—I find that taking 10 minutes before returning to my family after work helps me relax and let go of the work day so I can be more present with my kids. 3. Enjoy it! People will say that it “goes by so fast”—it’s true! So don’t feel bad about choosing your family over work, because work will always be there, your kids are only little once.
