There is absolutely nothing that compares to the quiet satisfaction; kindness; galloping unicorns; love and purpose that fills me head to toe after a yoga class. Um, why don’t I do this every day, again? It’s time to get back to a regular practice and cut out the excuses.
Too busy. Too tired. Too much going on… If I am ever to stand a chance of gettin ‘er done, I need to make the practice work for me, and there’s one studio that comes to mind right away: Downward Dog Yoga Centre.
Tucked up on a second floor, DWD feels like a secret hideaway from the hustle and bustle of Queen West. Cozy and spacious, the studio has a relaxed, sweaty vibe and a mini retail space at the front with a sweet selection of yoga duds.
This a studio with no annoying restrictions or antiquated rules. They totally get it, and are all about making the practice work with your body and needs. If you only have 20 minutes, you won’t be shunned in the Mysore room for running out after sun salutations. Or, if you’re looking to get deeper into a posture because it feels reaaaally good, you can repeat as many times as you’d like without getting cut eye from your teacher. At DWD, nurturing individuality and mindfulness is at the core of the philosophy.
Whether you’re practicing Mysore-style (that’s self guided practice) or in a class, there’s no intimidation or pressure to pretzel into asanas your body isn’t ready for. DWD teachers will never tell you to try something that feels wrong or hurts. That’s how injuries happen.
A sense of responsibility to students is what I look for in a yoga teacher, not somebody who can touch their toes and needs some quick cash. Luckily, those sorts of “teachers” are quickly weeded out from the teacher training program at DWD, which requires many hours and a firm commitment.
DWD is known for having taught some of Toronto’s most respected and beloved teachers. They even run a Teachers training in Pavones, Costa Rica for two weeks each year. It’s recommended for teachers and advanced students alike, as many go on the retreat to deepen their practice.
Whether you’re looking to start practicing or in search of a warm, inspiring space to keep one going, Downward Dog Yoga is the best fit for a yogi gal on the go.
Aaaaan, DWD has extended a very special offer to Shedoesthecity readers: For a limited time only, purchase a 10 Class pass for ONLY $100+ using promo code SDTC10! Offer available until March 31, 2014.
