The E’s did it again this season, and this time to tune of DJ Brendan Fallis, a fixture at all things in vogue. Who knew a little girl’s mispronunciation of the word “maquillage” (makeup in French) would inspire a coveted collection of world-renowned outerwear? The name Mackage (oh, and by the way, that little girl would be co-designer Eran Elfassy’s niece) now rolls off the tongues of stylists, celebrities and chilly patrons everywhere. Each season, Elfassy and Elisa Dahan treat us to yet another mouth watering selection of pieces that make one want to skip the warmer months altogether.
On the third day of World MasterCard Fashion Week, the Montreal-based design duo presented the line’s 2013 fall collection. In true French style, they sent their models down a liquid black runway with hair slicked back like an army of badass greasers.
We saw the classics redefined, with men’s tailored jackets accented with bright orange hues and unexpected leather details along the lapel. The school girl-gone-rogue look also made heads turn with a buttery-leather take on the above-the-knee pleated skirt in merlot and onyx (if you didn’t think it was possible to make that piece sexier…think again). New to the Mackage mix came the introduction of the line’s first ever handbag collection, featuring structured totes and briefcase cuts for both men and women.
In a sartorial cocktail of sorts, the women’s looks evoked thoughts of our Clueless heroine Cher Horowitz shaken and stirred with a vampier, sexier take on Daria’s Jane Lane while the men’s signaled a call-back to the boys of Dead Poet’s Society, all grown up and with better hair products.
Wine-coloured fur paneling made for the perfect accompaniment to the wealth of stately leather pieces while plaid made an occasional but welcomed appearance on a mens’ puffa-leather hybrid jacket.
We salute Mackage’s fall collection and wait with breath that is bated for that time of year when your topper will collect the utmost of envious stares. Simply slick back your hair and paint your pout and you too will be ready to march down your winter runway.
