Attention writers and Broken Social Scene fans: Want BSS members (Feist, Brendan Canning and Charles Spearin) and Senior Editor at House of Anansi Jared Bland to read your work? Then enter the story contest based on You Forgot It In People before March 29th.
If you’re from Toronto, BSS has probably played an important part in your lovestruck summers at some point. Just reading the tracklist from their first album can inspire waves of nostalgia, and House of Anansi wants you to put that inspiration on the page. Write a short story based on one song title (see below for the complete list), using the track name as either your title or your theme. The top 13 stories will be compiled into an e-book released by House of Anansi. One first prize winner will also receive a laundry list of cool stuffs, starting with $500. 2nd and 3rd place winners will also receive a cash prize and swag, and the ten runners-up will all get prize packs from Broken Social Scene and House of Anansi, as well as publication in the e-book.
Stories must be between 1000-5000 words, original and unpublished, written in English. Applicants must be Canadian residents (excluding Quebec) 18 years of age or older. So what’ll it be? Will you write your own version of This Movie Is Broken, a love story set to a backdrop of city skyscrapers and crashing crescendos? Will you tell the stories you always see when the songs play, giving life to characters you’ve been imagining for years? Or will revisiting the album trigger a new spark of creativity as the songs inspire untold stories of their own? Get writing! We wonder which song title will inspire the most people?
