6:30 pm The Art of Night Photography @ TBA. This 3 hour introduction combines a presentation of background information with a hands-on outdoor shooting session. You will need a DSLR digital camera and a tripod to support your camera if you want really sharp pictures. While no experience in night photography is necessary, for participants to enjoy this workshop they need a good grasp of the basic controls of their camera (i.e. aperture, shutter speed, and ISO). 7 pm “Insaturation” Opening Reception @ The Brockton Collective, 442-A Dufferin St. “In her latest body of work, Beck Pura demonstrates the questionable boundaries that colour maintains within nature as well as in a society hued by highly manufactured pigments. The common theme is chromaticity and luminance, as she experiments by painting landscapes in a variety of artificial light. The result is the simplicity of shape vs. space in the candor of neon toxicity.” Join her for a chromatic evening filled with art, discussion, music, and rad people.

6 pm “Totally Barely” Opening Reception @ Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects, 1086 Queen St. W. “David Hanes’ ‘Totally Barely’ features two new bodies of sculptural works addressing cultural developments in the use and distribution of images and objects. The digital images in the series Aware have been culled from online image searches of popular works of art, manipulated with Photoshop’s ‘content aware’ function, and printed on nearly sheer polyester nylon fabric and stretched to look like a painting. Somewhere between photography, sculpture and painting, Aware could be understood as image-objects that are innately a combination of all three mediums.” Until 9 pm. Exhibition runs until March 17th.

A thesis solo exhibition by York University’s Visual Arts MFA student; Carly McAskill. “Using drawing and collage, ‘Mother Line: A Self Portrait’, chronicles McAskill’s abiding interest in bringing together an assemblage of different representations of women. She believes in the magical powers of representation through collage: ‘the fragments are significant as they become a tool to tell a story and reflect a pattern’. From the Victorian era to the present, ‘Mother Line: A Self-Portrait’ addresses McAskill’s relationship to her matriarchal family line in terms of the psychic production of ‘feminine’ identity.” Until 10 pm. Due to the self-taught nature of their paintings, both have often been closely associated with the marginal artists known as ‘Outsiders’. Shunning both the ‘Outsider’ and ‘Fine-Arts’ labels, the Cooney Brothers consider themselves Neo-Folk painters… Rolo is also self-taught, and has only recently decided to take up painting as a way of coping with his Ochlophobia (the fear of groups of people) that often prevents him from leaving his home. For Leigh, painting was originally a therapeutic way of coping with his Attention Deficit Disorder and high anxiety. Both Leigh and Rolo draw heavily on pop culture for inspiration.”

6:15 pm “Greenwich Village: Music That Defined a Generation” Screening @ Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, 506 Bloor St. W. “In the 1960s and early 1970s, Greenwich Village attracted numerous artists and activists. This creative and politically minded community banded together, imagining a better future amidst the social and political chaos of the time. A new generation of singers and songwriters, including Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Don McLean and Carly Simon helped develop a genre of music, political folk music, which challenged the status quo. They held peaceful gatherings singing songs that tackled issues like civil liberties and the war in Vietnam, but these events were often violently disrupted by the authorities. Featuring archival footage from concerts and interviews with musicians, ‘Greenwich Village: Music That Defined a Generation’ is a fascinating glimpse of a moment when music and politics collided.” Director Laura Archibald will be in attendance for a Q&A.

8 pm Bad Movie Night @ The Office Pub (third floor), 117 John St. This month, Bad Movie Night presents a veritable Cavalcade of Incompetence! Movies that aren’t just bad, but so poorly made that it will boggle your heretofore sweet, innocent minds. Here’s what they’ve chosen… Cool As Ice: “In the auspicious year of 1991, the world was bestowed with a cinematic blessing entitled ‘Cool As Ice’. Winning international acclaim from the public and critics alike, this movie would launch the illustrious film career of Vanilla Ice – who went on to star in numerous flicks including Cooler as Ice, Coolest as Ice, Vanilla Dippity Doo: Revenge of the Iceman, and an Oscar award-winning adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar.” The night starts off with a compilation of godawfully awesome rap videos featuring the musical “talents” of The Insane Clown Posse, Mr. T, Speak the Hungarian Rapper, and many more.
