This Sunday, in between Jersey Shore and Cribs, MTV Canada gets serious with Impact: Abortion Stories. A sort of opposite to the horrifyingly popular Teen Mom series, this special shares abortion stories as experienced by young men and women. From how their family first reacted to why they made the decision to abort and the impact it has since had on their life, this TV doc gleans the surface of a taboo subject in a way teens will relate to.

Emotional soundbytes are carefully edited together in MTV style while dramatic piano plays in the background. Before things get too heavy, intimate shares are cut with clips of MTV personality AJ Sovani debunking abortion myths with stats, facts and uterus diagrams with smiley faces.

When I was sixteen, my mom sat with me while I watched KIDS. I think that was the best form of birth control I ever received. Maybe this will be the same for teens today. It’s not a Hot Docs type doc but I have do applaud MTV for throwing something into the rotation that offers more than the usual soul-sucking reality dramarama. The special softly tackles the abortion issue in a way that will engage viewers, promote conversation and, hopefully, remind sexually active youth that unprotected sex has tough consequences. Don’t go there!
